What this tour actually is
One evening, handled end to end, and the whole reason this site exists: seeing the Kuala Selangor fireflies without having to organise the night around them. We collect you from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, stop at Bukit Melawati for the fort and the silver leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus selangorensis), sit down to a seafood dinner by the Selangor River (Sungai Selangor), then take you out on the water to watch thousands of synchronised fireflies (Pteroptyx tener) flashing in the berembang trees (Sonneratia caseolaris). When conditions allow, you may also see the blue tears, the bioluminescent glow of Noctiluca scintillans plankton in the water.
There are two ways to travel and they are genuinely different, so we keep the differences visible instead of averaging them away.
The private tour departs at 4:00 PM daily except Mondays and runs about six hours. It uses a traditional non-motorised sampan, which is quieter and darker on the river, includes eagle feeding, and picks up within 5 km of the Petronas Twin Towers.
The shared tour departs at 3:30 PM daily and runs about five and a half hours. It uses a covered electric boat, which is easier to board and better for families and older travellers, adds a stop at Sri Shakti Temple, and picks up within 3 km of the Twin Towers.
What’s included
Every price on this page covers the air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking licensed driver-guide, hotel pickup and drop-off inside the stated radius, the seafood dinner, the boat ticket for the firefly cruise, and the Bukit Melawati stop. Travel insurance and personal expenses are not included. Monkey feeding beans at Bukit Melawati are sold locally for about RM 2 to RM 5 if you want them.
Which river you end up on
The shared tour cruises the Bukit Belimbing river at Firefly Park Resort, using covered electric boats. The private tour uses a traditional non-motorised sampan, the quieter and more traditional way to see the colony. If you want to understand the difference before you book, read our guides to Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park and Firefly Park Resort at Bukit Belimbing. Neither river is better than the other. They suit different people.
Before you decide
If you are still weighing this up against driving yourself, we wrote the honest version of that comparison in Tour or go on your own?. If you are choosing dates, the best time to see the fireflies explains how the moon and the weather change what you will actually see.

Read this before you book
Firefly density varies with moon phase and rain, and blue tears are seasonal. Here is exactly what that means for the night you are booking.
Moon phase
A dark or new-moon night gives the strongest display. A bright full moon washes out the contrast that makes the flashing visible.
Rain
Heavy rain reduces firefly activity and muddies the river, which also hides any blue tears. Light drizzle is usually fine and the boats still run.
Blue tears
Blue tears are Noctiluca scintillans plankton. They are seasonal, they depend on a bloom, and they are never guaranteed on any date.
What we promise
We promise the evening: pickup, the fort, dinner, the boat and a licensed guide. We do not promise what the river will show you.
No operator can guarantee fireflies or blue tears on a given night. Anyone who does is selling you certainty that does not exist.
Book your evening
Both products check out through Bokun. Prices, departure times and inclusions are listed above in plain text so you can read everything before the widget loads.
Private tour
Departs 4:00 PM daily except Mondays. Sampan, eagle feeding, 5 km pickup radius.
Shared tour
Departs 3:30 PM daily. Electric boat, Sri Shakti Temple, 3 km pickup radius.

What guests say about the fireflies tour
4.9 average from 3,498+ Google reviews across Exotic Asia Holidays. Shown here for context. Reviews were collected by the parent operator, not on this site.
-
“They told us straight that a bright moon might dim the show, and it did, but the guide knew exactly where the fireflies were thickest. Honest people, brilliant evening.”
Sarah J., United Kingdom -
“The blue tears were subtle, just as they'd warned, but the fireflies lit the trees like Christmas. Dinner beforehand was fresh and the sampan ride was so peaceful.”
Marcus T., Australia -
“Pickup was on time, the fort and the monkeys were a lovely surprise, and the whole night was handled so we never had to drive. Perfect for our parents.”
Elena R., Spain -
“We compared the private and shared options on the site and picked private for the sampan. Worth it, quiet river, no engine noise, real fireflies.”

Fireflies Tour FAQs
Will I definitely see the fireflies and blue tears?
The fireflies are usually visible year-round, but density depends on moon phase and rain. A dark, dry night is best. Blue tears are seasonal and never guaranteed; they depend on a plankton bloom. We tell you this before you book rather than oversell the night.
What's the difference between the private and shared tour?
The private tour departs 4:00 PM daily except Mondays (about 6 hours), uses a non-motorised sampan, includes eagle feeding, and picks up within 5 km of the Twin Towers. The shared tour departs 3:30 PM daily (about 5.5 hours), uses a covered electric boat, visits Sri Shakti Temple, and picks up within 3 km.
How much does the tour cost?
The private tour is RM 270 per person for 2 to 3 pax, dropping to RM 180 per person at 8 or more, with children 3 to 11 at RM 180. The shared tour is RM 242 per adult and RM 165 per child 3 to 11. Dinner and boat tickets are included; travel insurance and personal expenses are not.
How long is the drive from Kuala Lumpur?
Kuala Selangor is about 65 to 70 km away, roughly 1.5 hours each way. There is no practical public-transport route at night, which is why the tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off.
Is the tour suitable for young children or older travellers?
Yes. The covered electric boat on the shared tour has easier boarding and suits families and older travellers. The sampan on the private tour is quieter and darker. Child pricing applies for ages 3 to 11 on both.
What if my hotel is outside the pickup radius?
Pickup is within 5 km of the Twin Towers for the private tour and 3 km for the shared tour. Outside that, there is either a surcharge or you can meet the group at Corus Hotel Kuala Lumpur.
Can I take photos of the fireflies?
Flash photography is not allowed on the river. It disturbs the fireflies and ruins the darkness everyone else is relying on. Use a long exposure and a steady hand, and expect the eye to see more than the camera does.
What happens if it rains?
Light rain is normal and the boats usually still run. In heavy rain the boat operators may hold or cancel the cruise for safety. Your guide will tell you what is happening on the night and we work out the fairest option with you.
How do I book, and is it secure?
Book directly through our Bokun checkout on this page. You get an instant email voucher, and your driver's WhatsApp contact is sent the day before pickup so you know exactly who is collecting you.
