What Bukit Belimbing actually is

Firefly Park Resort sits at Bukit Belimbing, downstream of the traditional jetty, and it is the larger and more organised of the two operations that run boats out to the Kuala Selangor fireflies. Where Kampung Kuantan is a wooden jetty and a row of paddle boats, Bukit Belimbing is a proper ticketing area, a covered waiting shelter and a fleet of electric boats.

This is the river our shared tour uses, so if you book the shared option on our fireflies tour this is where you will be on the water. The private option uses a sampan instead, and we explain that difference honestly rather than pretending the two are interchangeable.

The boats, and why they matter

The boats here are covered fibreglass hulls with electric motors. Electric matters for two reasons. There is no exhaust smell sitting over the water, and the motor noise is a low hum rather than an outboard’s rattle, so you are not shouting over an engine while trying to watch a quiet natural display.

The practical difference is boarding. You step down onto a flat deck with a rail and a roof, not into a low open sampan. If you are travelling with a five-year-old, with grandparents, or with anyone who is going to hesitate at the edge of a dark jetty, that one detail decides the evening. The covered roof also means a sudden shower does not end your cruise.

The trade-off, stated plainly

The electric boats are easier and more comfortable. The sampans are quieter and darker. If absolute stillness matters more to you than easy boarding, the traditional sampan river at Kampung Kuantan is the better fit.

Same species, same conditions

The fireflies are the same insects on both rivers: Pteroptyx tener, clustering on berembang mangrove trees and flashing in synchrony. The same things decide how good your night is, too. A dark moon and a dry evening between roughly 8 and 10 PM will show you far more than a full moon or a downpour, whichever jetty you leave from.

What differs is the setting, not the wildlife. Anyone who tells you one river “has more fireflies” is guessing. Colony density shifts along the bank from week to week on both stretches, which is why the boatman’s local knowledge on the night is worth more than any general claim online.

Rules on the water

Same as anywhere on this river. No flash photography, no torches at the trees, phone screens dimmed, voices low. The boats sit close together on a busy evening and one bright screen carries a long way across dark water.

Life jackets are provided and should be worn. Wear something with sleeves; the river is cooler than KL and the mosquitoes find bare arms quickly.

Who Bukit Belimbing suits

Families with children, multi-generation groups, older travellers, anyone with limited mobility, and anyone who would rather have a roof over them if the weather turns. It is also the sensible pick if this is your first time on the river and you would rather ease into it.

It suits you less if you came specifically for the traditional experience and would be disappointed by an organised jetty and a motor, however quiet.

Costs and getting there

Bukit Belimbing is about 65 to 70 km from Kuala Lumpur, an hour and a half by car, with no practical way back by public transport at night. Boat tickets are bought at the park if you visit independently.
