What Kampung Kuantan actually is

Kampung Kuantan is the traditional firefly jetty on the Selangor River, upstream of Kuala Selangor town. It is the older and quieter of the two places you can see the Kuala Selangor fireflies, and the one most people picture when they read about the Malaysian fireflies: a small wooden boat, a boatman with a pole, and nothing between you and the trees.

The boats here are non-motorised sampans. Four passengers is a normal load. There is no engine, no generator hum and no deck lighting, which is exactly the point. On a dark night the only light on the water is the fireflies themselves. If you would rather have the evening arranged around this, that is what our fireflies tour does, though it is worth understanding the river first.

The trees are the whole story

The fireflies at Kampung Kuantan are Pteroptyx tener, a species that flashes in synchrony rather than at random. They cluster on berembang trees (Sonneratia caseolaris), a mangrove that lines the brackish stretch of the river. The colony does not spread evenly along the bank. It concentrates on particular trees, and a good boatman knows which ones are busy this week.

That is why a synchronised colony looks the way it does. Instead of scattered sparks, a whole tree pulses together, off and on, like a slow string of lights. On a strong night the effect is remarkable. On a bright full moon, when the contrast drops, the same trees can look ordinary. Nothing about the colony changed; your ability to see it did.

What decides your night

Darkness and dryness, mostly. A new moon and a dry evening between roughly 8 and 10 PM will show you far more than a full moon or a heavy downpour, on either river.

Etiquette on the water

The rules at Kampung Kuantan are short and they are enforced for a reason.

No flash photography. No torches pointed at the trees. Phone screens turned down or away. Voices low, because sound carries strangely over water at night and a loud boat spoils the trip for the three boats behind it.

Life jackets are provided and should be worn. The sampans sit low and they are stable, but you are stepping into a small boat in the dark, so take the boatman’s hand and sit down before you start looking around.

Who Kampung Kuantan suits

It suits people who want the quiet version. Couples, photographers who are happy to work with long exposures, and anyone for whom “traditional” is the point rather than a compromise. The absence of an engine is the single biggest difference in how the evening feels.

It suits some people less well. Boarding a low wooden sampan from a jetty in the dark is harder than stepping onto a covered boat with a rail. If you are travelling with small children, with anyone unsteady on their feet, or with a group that will not sit still for forty-five minutes, the electric-boat river at Bukit Belimbing is the more comfortable choice. We say that plainly because sending the wrong people to the wrong jetty helps nobody.

Getting there, and what it costs

Kampung Kuantan sits about 65 to 70 km from Kuala Lumpur, roughly an hour and a half by car, and there is no realistic public-transport route back at night. Boat tickets are bought at the jetty if you come independently.
